This is an icon of the Holy Martyrs of Iona, slaughtered towards the end of the first millennium in the Viking attacks that brought to ruin the ancient Celtic monasteries in the Isles. They are great teachers of love and forgiveness, the central virtues of Christian life.
By not fighting back, by not multiplying the evil in the hearts of those who killed them, they became children of Peace, children of God. They willingly gave their temporary lives to follow Christ’s commandments of love, and they gained in return eternal life in the Kingdom.
