St Allen is the image of love. We know very little, if anything, about the life of this sixth century Welsh bishop: no astonishing miracles, no great monasteries, no theological works are left from St Allen. What is left is his love for his people.
I struggle to even imagine how palpable, how real his love for his people must have been, for him to be remembered fifteen centuries later on account of that love.
I thought and prayed about this icon for a long time, and my feeling is that the only good solution is to bring Christ, St Allen and his people in one icon together. He is remembered for no particular miracle, except for his extraordinary love. The source of that love was his own love for Christ – I like this ‘ladder of love’, descending from Christ, through His Saint, to his people.
