St Brendan and St Ita

This is an icon of St Brendan the Navigator receiving a blessing from St Ita before starting one of his pilgrimages for Christ. St Ita, the Holy Abbess, is known in Ireland as the Foster-Mother of Christ’s Saints, because she took care of hundreds of children in her lifetime.
Among these children, several became saints themselves and were recognised as such by the Church. One of St Ita’s little children grew to become the extraordinary ascetic of the ocean – St Brendan the Navigator. He had such love and respect for St Ita that he always asked for her blessing and the protection of her prayers before his pilgrimages.
In this icon, the blessing of Christ pours down upon the two of them, so that a circle of light makes the three – Christ, St Ita and St Brendan – One in His Grace. Love and blessing always unite us, and they always make us One with God.
