St Columba of Iona

This is an icon of St Columba, the holy Abbot of the Celtic Monastery on the Isle of Iona. St Columba came to the Isles from Ireland, in 563, and founded what would become one of the holiest and most influential Monasteries in the history of Celtic Christianity.

He is depicted writing an illuminated manuscript in reference to the event that forced him to leave Ireland, and also in reference to the amazing Book of Kells, which was created in his monastery on Iona.

The Isle of Iona is fifteen minutes away from our Nuns’ House on Mull. We visit the holy sites on the island and we celebrate the Divine Liturgy there during all our summer pilgrimages.
