Description
The Nuns’ Cave is one of the four caves on the Isle of Mull inhabited by Christian monastics and hermits from the 500s onwards.
This is a rather large cave, fit for a community of several monastics, and it is a rare historical trace of female monasticism on Mull. Beautiful crosses, dated to the sixth century, are carved into the stone of the walls of the cave.
In this icon, the Mothers are depicted into a womb of light, a womb of grace that flows down from Heavens over them. They all stretch their hands in prayer, and one of them receives in her palms the grace of God.
The Byzantine inspiration for this icon is the Icon of the Holy Transfiguration – the position of the three nuns is that of the three Apostles as they fall to the ground before the Transfigured Christ.

It is mounted on durable, light wood, with round edges and a hanging hole.
Our original commissions are unique, never repeated and made using local photographs of the actual geography of the Isles. Most of our colours are sourced from the Book of Kells (made on the Isle of Iona during the Celtic millennium) and we try to combine Byzantine and Egyptian iconography, as a recognition of the historical, cultural and spiritual connections between the Desert Fathers and the Celtic Saints.
